Nora Guthrie, daughter of American folk singer Woody Guthrie, sister of singer-songwriter Arlo Guthrie, and granddaughter of renowned Yiddish poet Aliza Greenblatt, released this single in 19This beautiful and strange song depicts 19th century Art Nouveau aestheticism with a sound image reminiscent of the Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds," and is a miraculous masterpiece that will be list The lyrics are thought to be an homage to 19th-century poet Emily Dickinson, and the cover's photo of Nora Dickinson evokes Dickinson's era. The song was written by 18-year-old Eric Eisner, her boyfriend and a member of the band The Strangers, a precursor to the Fifth Avenue Band, alongside Peter Galway. At the time, Eric and Nora were fascinated by bossa nova and its singer Astrud Gilberto, whose influence can be heard particularly in "Home Before Dark." However, the fact that Nora, a complete vocal novice, was chosen to sing the song was another miracle. Professional musician Artie Schrock, who recorded the song, added impressive harpsichord and strings to create a melancholic atmosphere. (Note: "Nora Lee," which Eric Eisner later wrote for Howdy Moon, refers to Norah Guthrie.) |
